Guy Unsworth

Biography

Guy grew up in Southport and studied Industrial Economics at Nottingham. Initially acting on the side, playing Colonel Pickering in My Fair Lady, he moved into directing with Humble Boy and served as Publicity Officer on the 2006–07 committee. In his final year he directed Proof, which reached the National Student Drama Festival finals and won six of the twelve awards, including the Directors Guild award for Best New Director and the Stage Electrics award for Best New Designer for Guy himself.

After graduating he trained in theatre directing at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, then worked as Assistant and Associate Director on productions in the West End and at the Royal Shakespeare Company. His Fresher The Musical won Best New Musical at the Edinburgh Fringe’s Musical Theatre Matters awards.

Now a freelance director and writer working in the UK and internationally, his credits include the 2018 stage adaptation of Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em (three UK tours), Being Mr Wickham (Jermyn Street Theatre, New York and the Garrick Theatre), Miss Saigon in Oslo and Gothenburg, My Fair Lady in Concert at the Liceu Opera Barcelona, three productions for Singapore Repertory Theatre’s Shakespeare in the Park, and Joyride: The Roxette Musical for Malmö Opera, which he wrote and directed. His theatre-film The System (2021) was nominated for Best Director and Best Feature Film at the Sensei Tokyo Film Festival. He was also part of the creative team for the Queen’s 90th Birthday Celebrations in 2016.
