The Devil and his entourage appear in Stalinist Moscow trailing fire and chaos in their wake in Edward Kemp’s adaptation of The Master and Margarita. The play follows the story of a struggling playwright whose work is rejected and ridiculed, and the beautiful Margarita who falls in love with him. With the city in pandemonium, the theatre in ruin and the Master missing, Margarita calls on the Devil’s assistance. By cleverly interweaving several plot lines including extracts from the Master’s play set in biblical Jerusalem, senses of fear and dark humour are blended seamlessly together in this magical tale.
- This show nearly broke me, in one 6 minute scene there were over 70 cues, 50 of which were lighting cues. Also the bench used had to be reparired mid show as in a warm up an actor sat on it and broke one end. — Ben Woodford 2017-11-06
