The cast is listed in order of appearance. The action of the play takes place in the living room of Bradley and Ann’s upstate New York house, with one interval of 10 minutes between Acts I and II. Tickets £2.00 members / £2.50 non-members.
From the programme notes: “A.R. Gurney’s plays focus on an ‘ethnic minority of a special sort,’ that of the WASPS — White Anglo-Saxon Protestants. This is the affluent American class that once ‘ruled the country.’ … In The Cocktail Hour, A.R. Gurney shares this scepticism, but he also looks at the fact that WASPS are misunderstood in today’s society. As Ann says, ‘They don’t like us, John…. They think we’re all Republicans, and all superficial, and all alcoholics.’”
The elaborate set, built by Andy Davis and Jared Manley of J&A Set Design and Creative Effects with the assistance of Catherine Butler and Anne Price, was subsequently converted into a pub set for Who Claimed Roger’s Habit, with Jolin Warren’s permission.
